Herbal Ball Treatment
Thai herbal balls are a method of treatment employed in traditional Thai medicine. Herbal Ball application is an integral part of Thai "hot therapy". The herbal ball is a useful way to apply heat along Sen Lines (nerve passageways), acupressure points and points that could not otherwise be massaged, and is considered to be as effective a method of delivering hot pressure as acupressure.
The blend of herbs used is the traditional recipe of the Wat Po temple in Bankok. This blend of traditional Thai herbs has a therapeutic, relaxing and invigorating effect on the body and mind, while also soothing sore and over-worked muscles and giving a boost for the body’s life energy level. The herbal balls are used to relieve sprains, strains of muscles and tendons, stiffness in the joints, inflammation and to stimulate the circulation of blood. This massage technique is excellent for relief of stiff, sore or strained muscles and ligaments, back pain, arthritis, chronic pain or injury, disorders of the internal organs, skin diseases, migraines and chronic stress or anxiety.
In balancing a persons life energy (or "Prana"), Thai herbal massage benefits the body, mind, and spirit. The Thai Luk Pra Kob or Herbal Ball can be used hot or cold, and provides the same type of stimulation as acupressure. It is often used to stimulate tender sensitive areas that cannot be massaged directly.
Use of the Sabai Herbal Ball during the course of the massage is very relaxing. Therapists can use it on the client in order to do help with any one or more of the following:
- Relaxing and stimulating – dissipating any tension
- Increase mobility before or after stretching
- Relieve sinus pressure when used on the face, head or neck
- Soften and loosen the connections between bones
- Encourage digestion – stimulate the organs when used on the abdomen
Apply to the skin directly, or through the client's massage clothes, and allow the Sabai ball to warm the client's body, penetrating deeply, and before moving on to deep acupressure work. The Thai herbal ball massage is also very effective in applications such as facials, and therapeutic massage of the neck, and base of the skull. It is used too as an integral element of physical therapy and for orthopedic and osteopathic treatments in Thailand.
Other uses can include using Sabai balls for migraines, for general tension headaches, for sports medicine as an ice pack/compress for injury (must heat the ball first to release alkaloids in the herbs then freeze), general spa use at home – give yourself or someone you care about a massage, foot care and hand massage, herbal aroma fragrant/scent for use in drawers or closets. They can also be steamed in a special steamer for aromatherapy.
