The Benefits of Massage

There are many benefits to bringing massage and body work into your life on a regular basis. Take a moment to read about how it might help you.

Massage is good for you . It increases your circulation, cleans out your lymphatic system, relaxes and tones your muscles and clears the cobwebs out of your mind. Take a deep breath. Give yourself some time. That is the ad that I ran in the Penny Power paper when I was first certified. It is responsible for helping me get my practice started and massage does do and help to do each of those things as much today as it did back then.

Of course the obvious and most talked about benefits of getting your old body a massage on a regular basis are that a good massage relaxes muscle spasm and relieves muscle tension. But there is much more to it than that. While you are spacing out to some new and wonderfully restful music, many things are happening to your whole system. New red blood cells are being born, and the blood supply and nutrition to your muscles is increasing moment by moment. The massage is helping your system to release all of the harmful "fatigue" products that accumulated during the gardening marathon or that intense golfing game.

If you are a more sedentary person, massage can help prevent or delay muscular atrophy as well as improve your overall muscle tone. It can also compensate, at least in part, for lack of exercise and muscular contraction if, because of injury or age, you are forced to remain inactive. In these cases, massage helps to return venous blood to your heart and so ease the strain on one of your most important organs.

There are some deeper techniques that can separate muscle fibers. These methods undo or prevent the formation of adhesions. These little buggers can be very painful and reduce your range of motion so getting rid of them is a good thing. A good massage can also help your body repair its tissues, so if you are healing from any bone fracture then a massage is really quite necessary. Massage can have a sedative, stimulating or even exhausting effect on your nervous system. That depends on the type and length of the massage treatment given. It also depends on your stress levels when you come in for your massage.

Some authorities tell us that massages can and do burst the fat capsules in the subcutaneous tissues so that the fat can be absorbed. If you combine this with a nutritious and low calorie diet, massage can be an aid to losing weight. Massage also increases the excretion of fluids through the kidneys, so I always tell you to drink, drink, and drink your water. This is a great way to flush your system.

As we all age and our joints become stiffer and more painful, massage improves their circulation and nutrition. It also helps lessen inflammation and swelling and pain. If you have a sprain or strain, then you’ve got it, massage is for you. It disperses the edema following the injury, lessens the pain and facilitates a fuller range of motion.

Now, what do you say? You owe it to yourself to get yourself regular, good professional massage. Think of how much better you will feel and think of how much better you will be.
